The NewsFlash strategy browser

The offline VGAP strategy browser! Use your WWW browser to go through the 217 strategy pages. The HTML pages use picts and frames, but a no-frames version is also included. Even without a WWW browser the plain text strategy files can be read with an ordinary text editor, though you would need quite some time to read through all megabytes of plain text.
The files included in this browser are extracted from the alt.games.vga-planets newsgroup. I've collected them over the past four years. They contain valuable ideas from (experienced) players willing to share their deepest thoughts with the rest of us... For instance thoughts about which use ship type X of race B has according to someone, but also colonisation strategies and useful hints for playing against the Privateers.
I'll keep adding to this file - when I've got enough new and interesting threads from the newsgroup.

The DOS version (437 kB): nwsflash.zip

I've moved the ON-LINE version of NewsFlash to a different site. Surf to the new, restyled ON-LINE version of NewsFlash.

The Privateer Treasury

Mark Wilmot ([email protected], [email protected]) has compiled a collection of Privateer related hints over the past several years from numerous sites on the www, the newsgroup, BBS's, AOL, and private correpondence. As numerous players on AOL kept asking for copies of the raw clip file, he decided to go thru and and organize it after a fashion and simply upload it.

He is presently working on a Privateer's Logbook which will incorporate many of these ideas as well as his own experiences into a more easily digestable form.

This release is an 123 kB plain text file that includes a mass of sorted/unsorted notes. Some of these are his own, most are from others. Some may be a bit out of date due to changes in host since they were first collected and a few contain plain inaccuracies in places. However, all-in-all they are a good source of ideas on how to make the most of everyone's favorite race: The Privateers.

The Firm

'The Firm' is not just a reference sheet, it's a 50 page document that might as well replace Tims own docs - every question that would make you turn back into reading the VGAP docs is answered in The Firm.
You could consider 'The Firm' to be the 'VGA-Planets Additional Docs'.

"Whoever read the docs more and better, has the best knowledge of the game,
but the one with the most fantasy to combine and invent new tactics will win."

The Firm was compiled by Edwin ten Brink ([email protected]). Portions of the data and information in the file are taken from documentation and texts owned by their respective copyright holders. "The Firm" is FREE to anyone who wants it.

This version was last revised on October 4th 1997 for host v3.22.016. The file is formatted for Word 6.0 for Windows.

The Colonel's files

The Colonel's Files were written by Eduardo Fonseca aka The Colonel. He lives in Brazil, and when you've read this strategy file he wrote you will have to agree he's an awesome VGAP player...!

Taken from his introduction:
I realize the time spent writing these words could be used for studying music or other things, however I know I can contribute a little of my experience and 'know-how' to other VGA Planets players, from novices to experts. I have been playing Planets since March 1994 when I saw it for the first time. During this period, I've been learning as much as I can about this wonderful game. Now, as I have collected a little VGAP knowledge, I have decided to detail what I have learned.

I do not intend to teach you how to play VGA Planets. My goal is give you a little help in key areas .. without it, you could spend a lot of time only to arrive at the same point.

Personally I liked the Colonel's files very much - it resembled much of my own thoughts. It makes very good reading, and the contents are quite interesting. The file is formatted for Word 6.0 for Windows. (A plain text file is not available due to the tables in the file.)

Enough said! Download the zipped archive of the Colonel's files now! (11 kB)

The -H- Files

The -H-Files archive is a collection of submissions & strategy hints that were nabbed off alt.games.vga-planets and excellent web sites (including mine :-)

The main purpose of the -H- Files is to help novice players avoid common pitfalls & allow them to play competently in games with more experienced players. It may also contain some tips of value to relatively advanced players.

The -H- Files were collected by Luc Projean.
The HINTS file was begun by Roger Burton-West ([email protected]) and continued by Gary Grothman ([email protected]), Gordy Pine ([email protected]) and now by Luc Projean ([email protected]).
